Follow the River: A Juried Exhibition Presented by the Northampton Arts Council
Deadline for Submissions: August 14, 2011
Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation… even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind. –Leonardo da Vinci
Theme: Water
This October, the Northampton Arts Council and the city of Northampton invite area artists to celebrate and reflect on the essential qualities and importance of water in conjunction with a new public art project on the Route 9 railroad bridge. Artist and photographer David Teeple is creating this new installation titled ‘Water Music.’ The focus of the Northampton Arts Council’s juried exhibition at the Hosmer Gallery, ‘Follow the River,’ provides a conceptual framework that directly engages with the innovative power, beauty, and scope of art inspired by water.
Entries must be received on or before midnight, EST, Sunday, August 14, 2011.
Curatorial Statement:
“For the exhibition ‘Follow the River,’ I’m seeking artists whose work engages, inspires and celebrates the life-affirming properties of water, while also addressing the water challenges facing the planet. The goal of this exhibition is to initiate a dialogue between artists and the community, and to demystify and provoke the many facets of this most elusive and essential compound. Topics encouraged, but not limited to, include beauty, recreation, agriculture, energy, symbolism, mythology and weather. How can the science of water be communicated through a work of art? What impact is the global water crisis having on us locally? What impact does pollution have on our drinking water? What are the politics behind the water crisis, and can art make a difference? The undercurrent of the exhibition is one of inquiry and optimism. “
