Eric Hnatow, Northampton’s Masked Man

When I asked Eric Hnatow for an interview, I knew I wouldn’t get a conventional response.  His sense of humor, adventure and anti-establishment are always present in his work and everyday life.

Eric has been making electronic music for most of his life. He spent several years working with his brother Tim in HNATIW, put out a kids dance album & game, scored several dance performances, performed as a solo act as well as with the Bright Hearts Brigade and LOLFM, and is currently making music with Haley Morgan in their band Home Body. Eric’s performances are notoriously full of energy, chaos, and spectacle. He often can be found wearing a handmade X-mas light jacket, making out with his synths, or climbing on the furniture during his shows.

Eric comes from a long line of Ukranian machinists. His sculptures, like his music, are full of repetition, color, and movable parts. Eric’s recent projects include a trio of Saint Storm Trooper figurines, one of which currently resides in my kitchen, 77 praying wax children(above), and a series of ceremonial masks. Eric also makes screen printed flyers, multi-media installations, and damn good kale & beans.

Eric lives in Northampton and is currently enrolled at Hampshire College. He is a Pisces.

Rumor has it that bassist Tina Weymouth listens to Eric’s music while working out.
